I'm not finding a lot of good info out there. I have some new equipment getting installed in my shop and wanted to make sure that we have adequate power and breakers available before we call the electricians in. One machine has a 5 HP motor, V three phase, about 6A. This might also be purchased with v motor pulling 12A, depending on how things pan out with what fits in our various breaker panels. My understanding is that each must have its own branch circuit, or I can put a singe breaker in and put fused disconnects at each machine if I want to run them off of the same breaker.
If the machines have their own fused disconnects next to them to protect the motors what size breakers do we need to plan for each circuit? And can you explain how one figures this? If they are separate machines, they should each have a branch circuit. Because the current rating is so small for these motors, both are probably required. Finding a panel breaker smaller than 10A is probably going to be difficult.
Thus you size the branch for 10A including the panel breaker, then use the above mentioned disconnect with a A adjustable breaker in the disconnect switch. The panel breaker is to protect the wire going to the machine. Thanks tony! Sometimes you have to do that to keep the inrush current from tripping your breaker. I think you are falling into a super common misconception.Motors are usually protected by both fuses or circuit breakers and by heater coils in a magnetic starter.
Fuses open the circuit quickly in case of a massive overload or short circuit. Heater coils provide a delay and open the circuit if the average current, over a period of time, is greater than the circuit is designed for. In some cases it may be necessary to use delayed action fuses. These provide a very short delay to prevent blowing a fuse during the short interval while the motor is accelerating up to its normal speed after being started.
Current values in this chart are approximate, and are compiled from data published by several motor manufacturers. They may be a little high or low for a specific motor.
For selection of magnetic starter heater coils, it is better to follow the nameplate current rating of the actual motor to be used rather than depending on this or any other table.
Wire and fuse sizes are listed for reference only, and may vary with type of insulation, number of conductors in a cable and other factors. Copies of the code can be ordered through most book stores. Other local ordinances may also apply. For selecting ampere rating of heater coils for magnetic motor starters, select the standard coil closest to the rating on the motor nameplate. If motor operates in cold environment, the coil with next lower rating may be preferred.
If in hot environment, the coil with next larger current rating may work better.

Thanks for the hard work that you put in and the variety of accommodation was just what was required. A truly memorable stay in Iceland which I hope to repeat soon. The location of hotels so close to trains was excellent. Particularly liked the lovely new hotel in Trondheim and the interesting historic hotel in Bergen. Bjarni was available to answer our questions promptly while on the tour and arranged for our luggage transfer after the tour had started. I travelled with family to Denmark, Norway and Sweden this month and had a fantastic time, thanks in large part to the excellent job that Nordic Visitor did in coordinating my trip.
I customized one of their Scandinavian package deals by extending my time in certain cities and Nordic Visitor accommodated my requests.
The hotels that they booked were very nice and all were close to tourist attractions and public transportation. The agency also booked some of the transportation, including a flight from Bergen to Stockholm, as well as all transportation for the Norway in a Nutshell tour, which was an awesome experience and the perfect way to take in the breathtaking scenery of the Norwegian mountains and fjords.
I would definitely use Nordic Visitor again, if I ever decide to return to Scandinavia. My wife and I took the Iceland Full Circle self-drive tour in early June. We then stayed on in Reykjavik for a few days. Our tour was arranged by Jelena. She was very helpful. We were very pleased with the tour.
