Keep your end goals in mind when deciding just how big you want to go. There's more to forced induction than deciding whether you want a turbocharger or a supercharger. As far as turbochargers are concerned, you can optimize a turbo setup for any type of Mustang build. The question is what should you go with? A turbocharger is a form of forced induction.

Instead of being powered by a belt like a supercharger, it's powered by the flow of exhaust gases. As the exhaust flows past the turbine, it spins a compressor in the housing. This compressor builds boost, and that compressed air is routed into your Mustangs intake system. Turbos are an incredibly efficient way to make horsepower since they do not have any parasitic drag like a supercharger would. However, since they are reliant on exhaust gas flow, boost isn't made instantly.

They come in a variety of setups, but the most common are single turbo kits or a parallel twin turbo kit. Single turbo kits are the most popular set up for a few simple reasons. The first reason is cost. This cost jumps substantially when you add another turbo to your kit. Another reason is space. Often times it's hard enough to find enough real estate under the hood to add a single turbo and all its associated plumbing. This becomes much more difficult when you have to find room for a second turbo as well.

Singles are great for making big horsepower too. They tend to have a broader power band than a twin turbo setup and do not run out of steam on the top end.

Despite some negatives, twin turbos are excellent kits if you can afford them! Each turbo only needs the exhaust from 4 cylinders to spool it, so they are able to spool much faster than a single kit. Smaller turbos in a twin turbo kit can also make very similar power as a larger single turbo. Less lag for the similar power gain, but there's still the cost to think about.

Whether you are making rounds at the local shows, blasting down the drag strip, or in a hurry to get the kids to soccer practice, twin turbos make for a great all-around turbo experience. However, a quality system installed in a high quality manner can be quite safe.

A turbocharger works by spinning turbines with your Mustang's exhaust gases and rerouting the compressed air back into the engine. A turbocharger has two sections: the turbine housing and compressor housing. Inside of both housings, there is a wheel which is connected to the other by a shaft. As the turbine side is spun by exhaust gas it causes the compressor wheel to spin. As this happens the compressor wheel starts to create suction, drawing air into the turbo and forcing it out the discharge.

The exhaust enters the turbo through the turbine exhaust gas inlet. As it enters it pushes the turbine wheel, spinning it and then exiting through the outlet leading to the downpipe which connects to the rest of the exhaust.

The air enters through the compressor air inlet. As it enters it is compressed and shoved out of the compressor discharge. In most conventional setups the air is then pushed through an intercooler located in the front of the car, cooling the air down before forcing it into the motor. This can cause lean burns and massive engine failures.

A tune will not only keep the engine healthy and safe, but also work well with the new found power your Mustang will have.What gives? Have we exhausted every possible combination for the Coyote and are now forced to duplicate testing? Well, the duplication part is accurate enough, but we're far from testing every combination. Fear not, we have good reason for running cams and the Hellion turbo system again on our Killer Coyote. Loyal readers will remember from our previous testing that the Stage 2 cams offered significant power gains—if Stage 2 cams are good, Stage 3 cams must be better.

On the turbo side, we were unsuccessful in our first attempt to test the Hellion system. It had nothing to do with the system itself and more to do with insufficient valvespring pressure.

With plenty of spring pressure, we had an obligation to retest and accurately demonstrate the merits of the turbo system on the Coyote.

On the cam side, we were getting closer and closer to reaching hp with the Coyote, so we wondered if a set of wilder cams might push us over the edge or at least get us closer. For those just joining us, when we first started this Killer Coyote series with the 5.

The motor initially produced hp and lb-ft of torque, and jumped to hp and lb-ft with headers from American Racing Headers. Thanks to the Controls Pack supplied by FRPP, running the Coyote was a plug-'n'-play operation, including control of the drive-by-wire throttle and variable cam timing. The Zex nitrous upped the power ante to hp, while the Kenne Bell Twin-Screw pushed this even further to hp and lb-ft of torque at less than 10 psi.

Given the impressive output, we were thankful for the Aeromotive A fuel system employed on the engine dyno. Since we managed to properly test the Hellion system this time, a little review of the turbo kit is in order.

Add to that an efficient air-to-air intercooler and all the necessary tubing, clamps and hardware, and the Hellion system is one complete turbo kit. For extra snarl, we replaced the standard 67mm turbo with a larger 76mm unit from Turbonetics. We fully expected to exceed hp at a reasonable boost level on this stock short-block, so we figured why not go big to keep things efficient? Besides, the 76mm Turbonetics turbo will allow us to crank things up once we upgrade to forged internals.

On 3 Performance F150 2011 – 2017 5.0 Twin Turbo System F-150

The tight confines of the engine bay necessitated a lowered turbo position see photo 5. Oil drain back from the turbo was accomplished with an electric scavenge pump.

The oil drained from the bottom of the turbo and was then pumped back up into an existing breather in the driver-side valve cover. This system eliminated the need to remove, drill, and tap or weld the oil pan. Some may question the use of stock exhaust manifolds on the turbo kit, but what could be better than a set of stainless tubular manifolds that fit perfectly in the chassis?

It may seem like the easy way out, but the factory stainless steel manifolds were designed to retain and channel the exhaust heat directly to the catalytic converters, making them an excellent choice for a turbo application. The Hellion system features a dedicated Y-pipe to merge the exhaust from the two factory manifolds to a common T4 turbo flange.

The Y-pipe also features a two-bolt mounting flange for a single 38mm Turbo Smart wastegate. Sized properly for the street and chassis dyno, the 38mm wastegate proved a tad on the small size to control boost on the engine dyno. The loads experienced on the engine dyno are never duplicated on the street or track or chassis dynoand this places additional strain on the wastegate.

For dyno testing, we just installed a second wastegate in the system to maximize boost control. With boost properly controlled, we relied on a manual wastegate controller from Turbo Smart to increase the boost pressure from the 7-psi wastegate spring setting.

With a few sections of tubing, silicone bends, and couplers installed, the Coyote from hell was back in action. Since we're fond of the Coyote motor and want to keep it in one piece for future testing, we made a few additional modifications, starting with replacing the Boss intake.

We installed the factory intake to limit maximum engine speed. Starting conservative, we worked our way up in boost and power. Equipped with the stock intake, Stage 2 cams, and CNC-ported heads, the normally aspirated Coyote produced hp and lb-ft of torque.

Run at a peak boost reading of just over 7 psi, the killer Coyote produced hp and lb-ft of torque. Stepping things up to 10 psi resulted in peak numbers of hp and lb-ft of torque. The combination of adequate valvespring pressure and our dual wastegates provided perfect and consistent boost control, never varying by more than 1 psi through the whole run.Fitment: Details.

It's a great turbo some of the piping doesn't fit perfectly. You're going to need to extend your wiring for your MAF. Boosts at 3k but drops off around 6k. The filter may get a little wet but as long as its not drenched in water or submerged, it will not affect the performance or cause any damage. You will need to upgrade your fuel system and have a custom dyno tune for operation.

Depending on your horsepower goals, the fuel system upgrade could be simple as a Boost-A-Pump or more involved with a complete return style fuel system. You will need larger fuel injectors, but the size will vary on your horsepower goals as well. Is there a turbo kit that will allow you to pass emissions for a daily driven car or will a supercharger be the only option for boost. Most turbo kits will not meet emissions regulations, however this will depend on your location and local emissions laws.

Most turbo kits will remove or relocate your cats, which is against emissions regulations in most areas. I want it to sound like a freightliner cruising on the highway. The turbo in this kit is a Precision single turbo and should include a silencer ring! Will this kit allow you to pass emissions in California or will you need to add cats to it?

Even with added catalytic converters, this system will not pass an inspection or emission test without the CARB OE number. To our knowledge, this kit does not interfere with the front sway bar on your car. Hey Ryan, This kit will come with most of the components you need. As for the exhaust you don't necessarily need to swap the mid pipe and cat back, but its a good idea so that you can get the best air flow out of that system.

As far other components you'll, it does not come with a fuel system, so fuel pump, injectors, and things of the nature you will need to purchase separately and those components depend on how you want to tune the turbo kit.

However, it wouldn't work with any existing cold air intake. This kit doesn't come with any fuel management components, so you would need to upgrade your injectors to compensate for the increased power and possibly upgrade your fuel rails and pump as well. You would also need a custom tune to run this turbo kit. This kit will come with a set of manifolds. No, this turbo system will eliminate the stock headers and mid pipe as it needs to route both banks exhaust gasses to the turbo.

A new inlet pipe would be needed to make this fit with the Cobra Jet manifold as that manifold uses an oval throttle body. No, this kit will not fit long tubes.

It is designed to fit stock headers and any aftermarket stock length header. This Single Turbo system comes with turbo headers. They will fully replace any existing headers.If you are looking to build the ultimate street driven truck, look no further. We have worked diligently to bring what we think is the best production forced induction system to market. This is accomplished solely by just controlling the boost, out of the box the kit is setup to make right around 6psi.

This is a perfect upgrade for those looking for more power for towing as well. For the person looking to max out their combo for the ultimate street truck, this system will accomplish that and more. Number one when we were designing the kit, we made it a point that the turbos must be mounted visually under the hood. When you first see under the hood of an On 3 F, the impression is insane. The turbos look killer, it keeps the engine bay looking very symmetrical, and it will run as good as it looks.

As for the power potential, too keep the combinations safe, most people on pump 93 oct fuel on a stock truck will make around rwhp on a safe tune.

2011- 2014 Mustang GT 5.0 Twin Turbo 1200+HP System

If you go to upgraded Mustang GT cams and e, most customers are making in the rwhp range. Keep in mind the turbo system itself will support well north of that however your stock engine would be at its limit. The On 3 Performance design truck currently is a work in progress but we have full intentions to run a In towing applications, your going to load the turbos and it will start making boost in the situations its needed.

With normal driving your going to see similar MPG and in some cases, with the proper setup and tune, you will improve your MPG. Also one of the major benefits to the towing applications, typically the trucks are downshifting hard when you come to any sort of incline.

With the turbos installed, its making over ft. So when approaching these situations, you will find the truck not downshifting as much and making the whole towing experience more enjoyable.

With a softer spring under the truck, it actually feels more comfortable to pull a trailer with. This was accomplished with an all stock bottom end engine and this would be the limits we recommend. Also watch the videos below to see it on the dyno backing up the numbers we made. This design process started from scratch with a set of custom cast stainless steel turbo manifolds. We have proven this technique already with our Coyote Mustang platform and rolled out this same manifold design for the trucks. Its an extremely durable and strong method compared to a traditional hand welded header.

We are the only ones on the market casting the truck manifold from stainless steel. From there it routes forward to the twin 60mm On 3 Performance ceramic ball bearing turbochargers. Once again we rolled into this project a completely new design turbocharger.

We opened a new mould to cast stainless steel exhaust housings with a custom v-band inlet. Instead of a traditional 4 bolt t4 rectangular flange, our housings will simple secure in place with one clamp. This makes for the turbo to have endless adjustment instead of being fixed in its position. The turbos we chose to run on this platform is the same proven On 3 60mm unit we have used since on the Mustangs. These have made over rear wheel horsepower with upgrades available to step up to 67 or 72mm units.As some know we have been designing a new turbo system for the Coyote platform Mustang GT 5.

As the car sits, we have not made any other modification to the setup other than a 1-piece drive shaft, injectors, and our complete twin turbo system. We are running our 60mm ceramic ball bearing On 3 Performance turbochargers and control the boost with our On 3 Performance twin 44mm wastegates. These are all standard items included in the production kit we are putting together as we speak.

This is good for over rwhp and the system will allow you to still fit up to the 70mm On 3 ceramic ball bearing unit billet wheel options available as well for serious power. Our system runs a custom dual inlet intercooler and single outlet with our 50mm blow off valve flange built into it. Its custom built to our spec and physically as large of a core that we could fit behind the bumper, height and width.

We have a few customers in line already that are going to make some big numbers and push the setup to the max. This is very concervative and with a little more time on the dyno and cam angle adjustments, I think we could get close to with the boost we are currently running. To get comparisons of what the competition is putting down, we will strap it down on a dynotjet in the near future just to compare numbers. Its not priority to me as I feel its a tool for tuning and I just dont want to get carried away with dyno numbers.

The car is making the power and the Seat of the pants feeling already is amazing on the low amount of boost we are running. We had the car in stock trim going As of right now, our quickest stock bottom end and daily driven car to date runs an neck breaking 9. Quickest On 3 equipped car to date with our out of the box On 3 60mm turbos went 8. To make everything into the production form took time and the kit you see on our car here is the first pre-production kit.

It looks great as you can see and built it as symmetrical as we could with the space we had to work with. People ask about air filters all the time, we do have air filters that are made and fit on the car.

The compressor covers look so good we have a hard time covering them up Driving the car on the road is just like it was stock, rather quiet unless the electric cutouts are open.

We will prepare some videos over the next few weeks driving the car around the city, doing pulls and hope to also get to the track for some passes. It sounds amazing turbo as you hear the turbos spooling up, exhaust screaming and tires trying their best to hook. Just on psi, the car has no problem going and leaving stripes down the road in the rear view. Its been a fun project and without a doubt the most fun car to drive here.
